Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne will be launching a new written declaration on human trafficking on Wednesday.
The Written Declaration, which was tabled by Liz, comes the day after the International Day against Slavery and will aim to raise awareness of the Blue Blindfold campaign and of the horrific crime of human trafficking, one of the most common forms of modern day slavery.
It will also call on the European Commission to encourage the sharing of best practice on how to combat trafficking amongst EU Member States and to create principles on how to better educate the public about human trafficking.
The UN estimates that 700 000- 2 million women and children are trafficked around the world each year. Many are forced into prostitution or domestic servitude.
The central message of the Blue Blindfold campaign, which is currently supported by the Netherlands, the UK and Ireland, is 'Don't Close Your Eyes To Human Trafficking'. The campaign aims to address some of the myths surrounding human trafficking that exist amongst the general public. It hopes to ensure that people are more aware of human trafficking and encourages them to speak out if they know of cases of trafficked human beings.
Liz will be hosting the event alongside Nick Kinsella, the head of the United Kingdom Human Trafficking Centre and Grahame Maxwell, the UK Police Lead on Human Trafficking
