Commenting on today's announcement of financial support for the car industry by Lord Mandelson, Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt said she was disappointed with the level of support and said that government should do more.
Mrs Burt said:
"The package has come very late, causing unnecessary worry for hundreds of thousands of employees. Some of the £2.3billion available was already announced and is not new.
"I am also disappointed that, despite expectations there would be some relief to help with financing for the purchase of new cars, Lord Mandelson has done nothing more than ask the new Trade Minister, Mervyn Davies to look into it."
However, loan guarantees could now be made available to ensure Jaguar Land Rover continues with the extra training, research and development to keep the company at the cutting edge on development of low carbon and greener technologies.
"I would like to have seen more, but I know that Jaguar Land Rover is well placed to take advantage of the guarantees on offer to preserve the capacity, skills and jobs at the heart of our local economy."
"It is essential that we do support real engineering instead of simply pumping money into banks."
